Irfan is a Civil Engineer Apprentice, and Slaman is an Engineering Apprentice at Islington Council.
Irfan has experience working on Road Danger Reduction, Traffic projects, and Lighting, with a focus mainly on assisting with liveable neighbourhoods, Cycle schemes, SuDS schemes, and greening schemes.
He is actively involved in development, growth, and innovation. Irfan aims to raise awareness and make an impact within the sector and the local authority.
Irfan serves as Chair of the Young People’s Forum at Islington Council and Vice Chair of LoYEG.
Irfan’s first talk to the industry is on a paper, whilst being in the industry for 8 months will be called ‘Small Cells: The Future of Attachments.’
Local Authorities are entering an exciting phase as smart infrastructure evolves. Lighting columns, once simple street fixtures, are now being transformed into smart assets—capable of hosting 5G small cells, environmental sensors, EV chargers, and more. This shift presents a major opportunity for councils to modernise public services and unlock new revenue streams.
Salman is part of the Climate Change and Transport department at Islington. Salman has been actively involved in a range of initiatives and meetings, including the Small Cell presentation, Youth Colleague Forum, and Peer Review sessions.
Salman has contributed to discussions on transport project facilitation and service meetings, and has recently shared insights on traffic concerns and livable neighbourhood schemes. Known for a proactive and collaborative approach, Salman regularly engages with colleagues across design reviews and planning sessions.
Their paper is titled ' Small Cells and the future of attachments'. This presentation will be an investigative look at the small cell industry, the future growth of the market and how these attachments impact on column assets and the variety of contracts.
Through the eyes of the next generation, this paper aims to examine the current state of the market and highlight areas that asset owners should consider. Using their small cell market research to present their findings to support the wider lighting community.
Lighting Live Annual Conference takes place 18th – 19th June 2025
