Lighting Live Annual Conference 2025 | Speakers Spotlight ‘Emily Bolt and Guy Harding'

Emily is the Technical Services Manager (Systems Architect) for UK & Ireland at Signify. Guy is the Technical Manager at the ILP.

Emily completed a BEng (hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Leeds in 2003. Following this, she started her career in the lighting industry and has 18 years of experience in the field of lighting and electrical.

Emily started her lighting journey working on the Sunderland Street Lighting PFI for Balfour Beatty as a trainee lighting designer and was promoted to Design Engineer during this time, producing lighting and electrical designs to the new BS5489-1:2003.

Following this, Emily joined WSP as a senior engineer working on highway lighting and electrical schemes for clients such as the Highways Agency for Area 12 and Area 8. The role involved the detailed design and project management of lighting and electrical schemes in accordance with BS5489:2003 and BS7671:2008, up to the value of £3M.   She also carried out the completion of road lighting economic assessments in accordance with TA49/07 and Midnight Switch Off and Full Switch Off assessments.

In 2011, Emily joined the world of manufacturing, working for Thorn Lighting Ltd as the technical lead on all LED Street Lighting bids and presented all offers at the interview stage.  Working closely with the product management team to advise on the UK market trends and specification requirements for new product ranges to bring them to market.

Joining Signify (formerly Philips Lighting) as the Technical Services Manager for UK&I  in 2014, and was responsible for maintaining their position as a leader in technology, innovation and standards within the marketplace. This includes all aspects of Road and Street from application (lighting design) to product (luminaires), systems (CMS) and services (lifecycle services). 

Emily regularly presents at industry events such as ILP, HEA and Highways Association on a range of topics. Following a presentation on light nuisance for the ILP last year, Emily authored an article which was subsequently published within the ILP journal. Emily has been a past Chairman of the ILP North East Region.
