North West Region: Jodrell Bank CPD Event

On a day sponsored by the lighting manufacturer, Candela Light, enjoy technical papers on dark skies, Live Labs and natural lighting in the environment.

Attendees will be afforded time to experience the delights of Jodrell Bank, including a short immersive film, a telecope talk and an opportunity to experience the exhibits.  Tea/ coffee and a light lunch is provided.

Title: Project NOS - Dark Skies in Wales

Synopsis - David and Gwenno will provide an overview of work taking place in Wales to promote the importance of dark skies.  Working within the National Parks and National Landscapes of Wales their work focuses on the key impacts of lighting on biodiversity, identifying good lighting and bad light practices, including examples of recent projects.  They will introduce and discuss the Welsh Government Good Practice Guide for external lighting.

Title:  LiveLabs2 Update

Synopsis - Karl will provide an overview of the ongoing LiveLabs2 project to decarbonise street lighting. Working on A roads across East Riding of Yorkshire, and further afield, with partners across the UK, the project focusses on replacement of street lighting at conflict zones with other visual alternatives and monitoring the impacts on carbon footprint, driver safety and biodiversity. ,Karl will provide an update on safety, carbon and financial data as the project draws to a close.

Title : From Lush Valleys to Desert Dunes, Designing for Pristine Skies

Synopsis : The natural environments of the Welsh Valleys and the Arabian Deserts are very different.  In addition, the planning processes, cultures, and historic expectations are very different.  However, the physics of light and designing out light pollution to restore and protect pristine skies are the same.  This paper will walk through the work undertaken in both environments then conclude with a proposal on how more could be done in this field of lighting design and engineering.
