I am happy to say I have been the Membership Services Manager for the last 6 months and flying solo for approximately 3 months. I often wonder why our ILP members are so reluctant to apply to upgrade their membership as it seems to me the natural progression from affiliate.
I have concluded that there seems to be many uncertainties surrounding the upgrading process. I would like to put these myths to bed for you.
Below are some of the examples I have heard from members surrounding upgrades.
You must have been an ILP affiliate for years before you can apply.
NOT TRUE anyone can apply to upgrade at any time.
I do not know where to start.
As always, at the beginning and this is just by downloading an application form from our website. I am always around to help at any stage.
I have heard it is such a lengthy process.
NOT TRUE 5 Steps is all it takes to upgrade your membership.
You must be an engineer?
NOT TRUE We encourage anyone engaged in lighting in some way shape or form to apply to become MILP and you do not have to be an engineer to do this.
You will not hear anything back for a long time?
NOT TRUE we aim to complete all upgrades within a three-month time schedule. It all depends on the quality of reports that are submitted, and the amount of alterations suggested by your assessors.
My CPD records are not up to date.
No problem, log onto your ILP Portal and if you have not already set this up, you can create a MyCareerPath account and prepare and update CPD records easily and quickly.
I do not know anyone who could propose me.
This could simply be your employer, a member of another professional body or even a work colleague in a responsible position. We can talk this through with you to help you identify suitable proposers.
If you have been furloughed or have time on your hands, then now might be the ideal opportunity to apply for an upgrade. Have courage in yourself and your abilities – and remember, we’re here to help you succeed!
I hope this has helped you bust some myths on upgrading your membership? For more information or you want to just introduce yourself have a quick chat or discuss your options please contact me at karen@theilp.org.uk, I can’t wait to hear from you.
