Tour of Westminster’s Gas Lighting

13 October 2022 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
An outdoor, in person event, looking at the historic gas lights in London’s Westminster area.

A joint event from IALD, SLL and ILP.

You may be surprised to hear that there are still over 300 gas lighting columns operating within Westminster City Council and Crown Estates. This highly recommended tour will guide you across the city, taking you through the history of gas street lighting from the early days of link boys lighting the path with flaming torches, the development of gas lighting to the modern replications being installed. Whilst on the tour your volunteer guides will also point out and explain the historical, unusual and interesting features along the route.

The tour takes around two hours and does involve a number of flights of steps.

There are 2 dates to choose from – 13 October or 3 November. Please only choose one of these as places are very limited. Thanks.

This is a free to attend outdoor event. Please wear suitable shoes and clothes for being outdoors whatever the weather.

The meeting place will be in Westminster and will be confirmed when you have booked your place.

Everyone who’d like refreshments together afterwards is free to do this independently. We anticipate gathering socially and will confirm on the night.

Everyone is welcome but places are limited – first come first served.

Please select your ticket according to which membership body you belong to. (If you belong to more than one, it doesn’t matter which you select.)

If you book and then your plans change, we would appreciate you cancelling your place to allow others to attend. Many thanks.

Thank you to Kimberly, Rebecca and Allan from WSP for giving up their time to be your volunteer tour guides.
