This event will tackle the priority topics and issues facing street lighting, including the future supply of talent for the lighting profession and the ongoing financial challenges facing the sector.

CPD talks and advice

Speakers:

  • Chris Dodd is the Energy Trading and Risk Manager for ESPO. He has 20 years’ experience in the Energy Industry including roles in Operation Risk, Financial Controls, Credit Risk, Compliance and Process Improvement. He will be talking about wholesale energy markets, factors that cause them to move and how to manage associated price risks.

Chris’s presentation will cover, Factors impacting electricity bills, commodity and non-commodity costs, Electricity commodity markets recent history, flexible trading and managing market risk, Commodity market outlook and non-commodity costs.

  • Shamala Evans-Gadgil is the CVLR Programme Delivery Manager and EV Infrastructure Programme Manager for Coventry City Council. She is a 4th year part-time PGR within the Research Institute for Clean Growth and Future Mobility at Coventry University and is also an experienced Senior Civil Engineer and Programme/Project Manager in designing and implementing challenging, complex, and wide-ranging infrastructure projects.

Her presentation will be a case study: Coventry the Second largest On-street EV Charging Network in the UK. It is about Coventry’s on-street residential charging point programme (ORCS) and addresses the concerns of residents who lack off-street parking facilities by providing easy access to charge points on residential streets. The project has successfully secured £7.56 million of government funding and £3.7 million private sector investment, which has facilitated the installation of 958 charge points across the city, with a further 450 single and dual socket charge points being currently installed, due for completion in April 2024.

  • Karl Rourke is the Service Manager for East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Street Lighting, Traffic Signals and CCTV department and is responsible for an overall revenue, capital and energy budget of £6m.

He joined the East Riding of Yorkshire Council as Street Lighting Engineer 14 years ago and has been Service Manager for 3 years now. In that time, he has overseen a £12m column replacement programme, £10m energy reduction investment and energy reduction of 17m units.

He has now also taken on the role of Project Manager for Live Labs 2 project, Decarbonising the Highway, looking at decarbonising and rationalising street lighting and lit sign provision from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, he will be presenting LiveLabs2 which is a Department of Transport research and innovation through which East Riding of Yorkshire Council are exploring ways to decarbonise their highways through replacement of street lighting with other visual equipment. They are approaching the end of the first year of the three-year program and this presentation will give an update of our progress this year and their activities in the coming financial year.

  • Craig Morris started out as a contracting electrician in the private sector before moving into Street Lighting at Doncaster City Council. He has 17 years’ experience within street lighting over several varying roles including site supervisor, maintenance engineer and now CMS and Street Lighting Manager and Highways Electrical duty holder. During his time, he has overseen the implementation of the LED roll out programme and installation of 46,000 LED lanterns and CMS nodes. His role now is to ensure that Doncaster provides value for money compliant street lighting whilst also managing risk of an ever-ageing assett.

His presentation will be Doncaster’s approach to safe-attachment deployment (PAS190/191 Non-Technical Advice for designers. The consequences of getting it wrong. “Don’t judge a book by its cover”). Attachments from a common-sense perspective. He will talk about his experiences and frustrations in developing a still evolving attachment policy for City of Doncaster Council, as well as the obstacles and challenges to be overcome.

  • Richard Newing IEng MILP, is Interim Team Manager, Structures & Street Lighting for Leicestershire County Council, and has been in the lighting Industry for over 15 years working within a local government setting, covering a variety of activities including street lighting design and cyclical maintenance. He has now moved into management with overall responsibility for the Structures & Street Lighting teams for the County Council.

His presentation aims to share the steps taken to show how Leicestershire County Council instigated a trail to dim all streetlights to 30% intensity from 8pm, in order to reduce carbon production and energy consumption within extremely challenging financial circumstances.
