• This paper discusses projects to protect the night sky while delivering good lighting, including the introduction of the UK’s first adaptive lighting pilots aligned to human and ecology requirements.

Peter Thorns – Thorn

The Birds and the Bees – Why Light at Night Matters

• This paper will discuss the ecological impact of light, considering how light can impact insects, plants, animals and humans and how one species may not be considered in isolation. The paper will also look at a number of response curves to light for a variety of species, and how this should impact the spectrum of light used by electric light at night. It will discuss the 5 strategies for reducing the impact of light at night and the possible effectiveness of each of these.
