At the start of 2020, no one could have predicted the horrendous year the world would have to endure. I know very few people who can say last year did not have a profound impact upon them or their family and friends.
2021 has begun with a resurgence of this terrible disease and more restriction to life and more difficulties for many. However, I think we can be more optimistic buoyed by the hope that science might allow life to return to something more familiar during this year.
Usually at this time the ILP President would look forward and make some predictions about our Institution and wider industry for the coming 12 months but this would seem inappropriate given the current position.
I would say however that the Institution will build on the good work done last year to continue to do all we can to support our membership by delivering high quality information, support, training and guidance.
I hope that as the coming months unfold, we will be able to organise safe face to face events, to meet with friends and colleagues and share CPD, knowledge, networking, technical innovation and education. We look forward to LDC sessions, professional events, industry exhibitions and training courses together.
But while that remains impossible in person, the ILP will continue to deliver all these benefits via our strong online presence and printed Lighting Journal magazine. A highlight of 2020 for me (excuse the pun) were the Hi Lights sessions which welcomed lighting professionals from all around the globe, providing a space to discuss everything from light festivals to electric vehicle charging. The sessions will continue during 2021, run in an informal and supportive atmosphere where the lighting community can find technical know-how along with friendship. I know last year this was much needed relief for many who attended.
We can also look forward to more online training courses being launched on our training platform, and the start of Light, Seen – a series of sessions providing a new way to find out more about the services and products available from our Premier Members.
